Wanderer Wonderer: The Beginning of wanderlust

Before there was a backpack, before there was the wanderlust, there was just me, Nawal Merrouch; a depressed, misunderstood older woman trapped in the body of a 24 year old girl, or at least that’s how I perceived myself to be before I threw aside my fears and followed my dream!
My journey started in the most peculiar of ways Read more

Wanderer Wonderer Meets Orangutan

Orangutans aka men of the forest are facing  extinction.  These beautiful creature, very playful and fun to be around are about to disappear and we can do nothing but donate and be thankful to the few foundations responsible for the setting up of such islands and resorts.

These wonderful guys brought joy to my heart!

Wanderer Wonderer: A Tale of a Moroccan Backpacker

Nawal Merrouch in Malaysia

For as long as I can remember, I have felt a need to inspire and motivate the people around me. Having given some thought to the drive behind this behavior, I would have to attribute its origin to my beloved Disney fairy tales. One day I would want to be Snow White and the next it would be Bella or Mulan. However, as I grew and matured, I began to realize that I didn’t want to be one of them, I wanted to be ALL of them! To me, Disney’s heroines encapsulated all the good I saw in people and the world. Cinderella was a true romantic, Snow White was strong and challenging, Bella was clever and smart and Mulan was without fear! All of these traits were things to which I would aspire to achieve and so I did. Keep reading HERE

The Asian Evil Queens

"Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?"

Except it's not a Mirror on the wall but rather a whitening product on the supermarket shelves.

I couldn't help but notice that all the products has skin whitening effect added to them. starting with Vaseline , sun protection lotion, all Nivea and Dove's products and basically any other skin lotion. Not to mention face wash, soap, shower gels, herbs and traditional products. Even underarm products (which by the way - and lets be honest- can be useful if you are a razors user) ! and the list goes on and on.

I didn't see how serious the Asian culture takes this fairness thing until I started getting comments ( at least more than 16 people) about my skin and I'm not even WHITE white. Basically they all express the same amazement as if I was a freak show but in a nice way. minus the pinching and slapping part which I'll get back to later on.

I went to this beautiful town in the suburbs of Jakarta, Indonesia and met amazing friendly families . They greeted me with smiles and big hugs without even knowing who I was. Some of them even invited me to sit down with them and have a chat. Bear in mind that none of us spoke the other's language. No it wasn't a complete disaster as some of you might think. In fact, it was a very pleasant experience. (Again, minus the slapping and pinching)

I sat down under this outhouse seat with a family and their neighbours and they all were talking about my skin and my eyelashes and suddenly an old woman in her 60's approached us with her husband and greeted me with a big hug and smile and then sat down beside me and started slapping my legs and pulling my arm saying she wished she had my skin . I had my Indonesian friend II at that moment to explain what she was saying. She would pull my skin - pinching it to be more specific- and repeat the word Cantik, Cantik ( pronounced chantic ) which means pretty or beautiful. A word I was familiar with since I've heard it before from my Indonesian roommate in Malaysia.
MIMI is her name. she spoke very little English but we communicated just fine throughout the 3 weeks we spent together.
Mimi was no different from the rest of Asian girls. She wanted to have lighter and brighter skin and so, she had a daily routine of applying all kind of different products on her body before bed.

Not to put the spotlight on Asian girls or criticise them but rather to feed my curiosity on how or what made these beautiful Asian girls think of fairness as an absolute standard of beauty. After a lot of thinking and a little of reasearch I came to the conclusion that the British (Western) colonisation came to establish the colour superiority syndrome. The colour symbolised or rather categorised people's status from inferior workers ( working under the sun) to White men who came with wealth and power to invade their country. This Idea can simply be put as White is better than dark and so this was mentally established and gradually became a beauty standard.

What's in it for me or how does it affect me? Other than the pinching, the stares and comment about my skin? Only how hard It's been for me to find inexpensive moisturisers and face wash without any whitening agent in them. I mean, how whiter could I actually get ?

Tragedy in Cambodia

Call Sam and Dean to burn some bones of Cambodia’s angry ghosts from the Khmer rouge regime. Ok maybe I obsess a little bit about the show Supernatural lately but, this story is nor funny neither was the experience.

To give you a heads up on the Khmer Rouge regime. I need to tell you first about the head of this inhuman regime. Leader Pol Pot began a radical experiment to create an agrarian utopia inspired in part by Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution in China.

Mao's "Great Leap Forward" economic program included forced evacuations of Chinese cities and the purging of "class enemies." Pol Pot following the leads of China , attempted to control every individual who might have been a threat to him and his new plan for Cambodia, which he renamed the Democratic Republic of Kampuchea.

He began by declaring, "This is Year Zero," and that society was about to be "purified." Capitalism, Western culture, city life, religion, and all foreign influences were to be extinguished in favor of an extreme form of peasant Communism. All foreigners were thus expelled, embassies, newspaper andTv station, were closed. Radios and bicycles were confiscated.Money was forbidden. All businesses were shuttered Thus Cambodia was sealed off from the outside world.

All of Cambodia's cities were then forcibly evacuated. Millions of Cambodians accustomed to city life were now forced into slave labor in Pol Pot's "killing fields" where they soon began dying from overwork, malnutrition and disease, on a diet of one tin of rice (180 grams) per person every two days.

Workdays in the fields began around 4 a.m. and lasted until 10 p.m.
Pol Pot was determined to eliminate remnants of the "old society" - the educated, the wealthy, Buddhist monks, police, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and former government officials. Ex-soldiers were killed along with their wives and children. Anyone suspected of disloyalty to Pol Pot, including eventually many Khmer Rouge leaders, was shot or bludgeoned with an ax. "What is rotten must be removed," a Khmer Rouge slogan proclaimed.
After a series of internal power struggles in the 1990s, Saloth Sar aka Pol POT (war name) finally lost control of the Khmer Rouge. In April 1998, 73-year-old Pol Pot died of an apparent heart attack following his arrest, before he could be brought to trial by an international tribunal for the events of 1975-79.                   What You will see when visiting Cambodia

A dreadful reminder of the suffering that still goes on every time you visit what's so called now "Cambodia's attractions" Oh what an attraction! The name doesn't even begin to describe the horror of it.The killing fields, the S21 torture prison. that expose you to the unburried skeletons of people who died suffering from all sorts of torture. Or even worse. teh killing tree. Each "attraction" has a story to tell.

                                  Choeung Ek Genocidal Center

One of the various killing fields in Cambodia

From the distance you will see a beautiful towering structure looking very huge  But as you enter, you see the ugliness and cruelty inside. Blame the irony. A building  full of human skulls at every level, from top to bottom you see only human skulls! displayed behind glass windows , and it doesn't end there.

They also expose the victims clothes soaked in blood from torture. You would never imagine the horror inside that building because it was never imagination, it was real and you can see it and feel the pain of those victims as you walk by the displayed torture tools
As more people needed to be killed every day, there are many mass grave , people killed by chemicals and buried alive or beaten up to death.

Who has the heart to beat up children to death on a tree?

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum aka s 21 prison

A high school turned into a torture facility . The museum's walls are decorated by the horrifying real photos of victims as well as paintings by survivors. Torture can make you creative in so many ways.

The following pictures will certainly paint thousands of words, but will never succeed to do these tortured souls justice.

Writing the article was not easy for me, as I picture the horror, the pain and the cries of the victims in my head
I heard and read a lot about the Nazi Camps of Hitler, cruelty of Stalin, dictatorship of Napoleon,  War in Palestine, Riots and Human Slaughter, but never heard of the tragedy of Cambodian people nor felt its impact so closely.  what's worse is that it was only  less than 38 years ago!

The Moroccan Bird

So I was  called  by  the  Morcocan Time newspaper. An article written by the very young and promising writer Cholay Amine.  Amine  took the time to unbark my tree and make my story known to the public. Quoting every word I said and giving me the chance to unfold my story the way I see it, the way I feel  it as I answered all of his triggering questions. I was glad he didn't rephrase it, because that might have stripped off
the feelings I put in each word.

Traveling is a big school where experiences are your best teachers. You should go on and try it. Maybe then, we'll have more Moroccan birds to be proud of.

5 Reasons you should travel abroad

Travelling has become way easier than it use to be. It is less expensive than you think, and it is actually possible to travel more.

And yet a great number of us have never traveled before. You want to. You desperately need to. But You don't.
Don't make up excuses such as; I have a job and what about my girlfriends?boyfriend? or my parents won't allow me.

Commitments. Cost. Relationships. And the list goes on. All are just pernicious excuses you trap yourself in to escape the truth. The truth that you are just too scared to go for it.
Trust me, we tend to forget that we have only one life and miss many opportunities and experiences.
Based on my experience, I recommend every person young or old (traveling has no age) to get out of their hometown and see what’s out there. but better do it young because it will help you grow older better. Here are 5 ways traveling changed/changing me forever.

1. Traveling changes the way you relate to the world.

I grew up in a tiny town. Just like many of you I had a difficult time envisioning much else outside my comfortable country bubble. When you travel to other countries and see the amazing beauty of sunsets over seas, monkeys swinging through rain forests, half naked kids running a round and making fun toys out of wood. You realize the world is full of more beauty than what you are capable of seeing in a lifetime.

If I didn't know what I was missing, I would have less of a desire to put the effort into taking the time to travel. You also develop a deeper sense of obligation to save our planet . After all, you've seen its beauty and it’s worth saving! One of the most rewarding aspects of travel is its ability to provide you with a fresh perspective

2. Traveling changes the way you relate to others.

Unfortunately, in my country the word "different" was somehow Beyond the pale. Everyone looked and acted basically the same. While I am traveling, I learned (learning still) about other cultures. I realized that my life could be enriched by opening up to people who didn't look or act like me. I developed friendships with people who were nothing like me, but were exactly what I needed. This taught me not fear experiencing relationships that were outside my comfort zone. It also taught me how to communicate without knowing teh language. It taught me how to accept and be accept by people who barely knew me (I barely knew them).

3. Traveling enable you to challenge yourself

It ain't easy to challenge yourself on new adventures. It is most likely to challenge yourself to finish a 16 episode drama in one day or a whole season of "How I met your mother" in one week but never to hike a jungle full of unknown creatures, drive on the left side after you've been taught your whole life to drive on the right one, bicycle a whole town without knowing how to read your map, eat smelly disgusting fruits just because! (surprisingly a lot of people love it ) Sleep in a 6 dormitory room with complete strangers.

Add to the lovely mix, asking information from a person who has no clue which language am I speaking. Now that's what I call a real challenge.

Brave enough to challenge yourself? do it now don't wait till it's too late

4. Traveling empowers you to behave modestly

The older I become, the more I realize I actually know very little about life. Traveling makes you see that the world is so much bigger than your perspective on it. You may think that learning stopped the minute you left school, but traveling gives you a great opportunity to soak up knowledge from every step you take. You soon realize the world doesn't revolve around you.

It doesn't mean that you are not important, but it does change your perspective to be more open to gain insight into new customs you've never seen or taken part in. Traveling teaches you to let go of the perceived concept of control. You learn that it’s a big enough challenge to just control yourself, and learn to give up trying to do so for the rest of the globe.

5. Traveling allows you to meet new people

You’ll encounter a lot of interesting people with different cultural backgrounds and you’ll learn a lot from them and their stories

I am very grateful for all teh friendship I have gained throughout my trips. They have been such an inspiration, a great deal of help and a soft shoulder to lean on in this lonesome journey.

Do this while you’re still young. Do not squander the time. You may never have it again.

Countries you can visit without Visa - Moroccan Passport

As a Moroccan myself, I know how hard it is to feel free to travel the world especially with the visa requirements and complications. That is probably why Moroccan youngsters are very discouraged to go abroad for holidays.  You will probably add the money issue as an excuse, but the truth is, traveling is not that expensive after all. I will get back to that topic later on in an other entry and I will show you how to travel on a very limited budget and things you can do with it.
As for now I will write down the list of countries you can visit with only a passport a little bit of cash and few clothes to survive the weather.

Out of more than 194 country in the world we are free to visit only 60 country and here is the list below.
